Anwar did Khairy Jamaluddin open the Pandora’s Box. to trap Najib,NAZRI GOT CONNED ONE APCO NAJIB.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (picture) caused a stir in Parliament today when he claimed that APCO’s links with the Najib administration started well before the 1 Malaysia concept.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had previously stated that APCO’s engagement came after the inception of 1 Malaysia.

Today, Anwar said that leading figures within APCO were already working for the government under the company Mind Team Sdn Bhd.

“Before APCO existed in Kuala Lumpur, the government had appointed Myteam Sdn Bhd. This company, which had offices in KL, was led by key individuals who are also senior personnel within APCO.”

Paul Stadlen, who was the director of Myteam, is now the CEO of APCO based in Kuala Lumpur and the other person, Margaret Kraus, is CEO of APCO Worldwide.

“Now the CEOs of APCO are key individuals involved in major accounts in Israel,” said Anwar.

The Opposition Leader also told Parliament that he had two documents to back up his claims.

According to Anwar, the first document was an agreement signed by the government on Aug 4, 2007 which authorises APCO to “repair” the government’s image.

“It (the agreement) bears the signature of the press secretary to the prime minister, that is Tengku Datuk Sariffudin Tengku Ahmad, which shows how close APCO is to the prime minister while in normal practice, government agreements are signed by government officers only,” said Anwar.

Besides that, he claimed that the other document provided details of the Israeli government’s agreement with APCO to undertake similar tasks to Malaysia’s agreement. The agreement was dated Jan 9, 1992.

“At the time of the agreement, Ehud Barak was the Chief of General Staff of Israel.

“Both these agreements clearly show the role of APCO as a lobbyist, which would warrant, inter alia, the safeguarding of government secrets made privy to APCO.

“APCO is also involved in the advising of a comprehensive strategic communications programme and must keep confidential all information pertaining to its operations. How can we expect APCO to be forthright about its actual role vis-a-vis 1 Malaysia as well as the various government campaigns?”

Anwar also mentioned another name — Doron Bergerbest-Eilon, former head of the Division of Protection and Security in the Israeli Security Agency with the rank of major-general. He is currently one of the international advisors to APCO.

“Can the PM come forward and tell Parliament in no uncertain terms that neither APCO or any of its affiliates, associates or personalities or individuals or organisations linked with them is involved in the 1 Malaysia project?” asked Anwar.

It is understood that news about APCO’s involvement with the Najib administration first surfaced on July 28, 2009.

Back then, The Malaysian Insider had reported on the undisclosed involvement of APCO in the government. APCO was reported to have been introduced to the PM by his adviser Omar Mustapha, who is a partner in Ethos Consultancy.

Later at a press conference, Anwar continued his campaign against APCO, claiming that the proof was the many “similarities” between 1 Israel and 1 Malaysia.

He alleged that the 1 Israel’s campaign focused a lot on health, and even included a 1 Israel health fund. 1 Malaysia too apparently focuses on health and has a 1 Malaysia fund as well as 1 Malaysia clinic.

“1 Israel’s motto is people first. The only thing different with 1 Malaysia is people first, performance now.”

Anwar rubbished claims by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin that he himself knew some of the leading figures in APCO personally.read more Khairy Jamaluddin open the Pandora’s Box.to trap Najib,NAZRI GOT CONNED ONE APCO NAJIB..

“I don’t know what Rembau is up to. Rembau has been the spokesperson for APCO, it’s a very pertinent question here for me to raise, he read about APCO, and took it upon himself to explain.”

It is understood that Anwar has requested that a royal commission be set up to investigate the matter further.

This is the tale of evil older than time itself…
This is the tale of a Box that holds the secrets to unlocking the
Universe, for good or for evil…
Heroic souls are born, resurrected and revealed as beings of Darkness
try to bring all reality crashing down upon us, and divine might clashes all
around them as they race towards their destinies that are all linked
to Pandora’s Box…

They’re sneaky. They lie. They’re evil. They think everyone else is an animal and therefore without souls. They’re the most despicable people on the planet to say the least. These evil doers are behind Hollywood, the porn industry, race mixing, the homosexual agenda …. you name it … and they’re the ones orchestrating it.

Barisan Nasional parliamentarians will be gearing up to crucify Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim (below) for his comments on APCO. The MPs might think that they are doing the BN government a favour by defending Najib and his high-flying consultancy company.

police interrogate anwar 110310 anwar pc 02In the minds of most BN lawmakers, defending the government is equivalent of defending the country. By the same logic, people who criticize the government are simply traitors to Malaysia.

I would like to invite my friends from the other side to think harder, and look harder. In fact, it does not require a lot of effort to find out the connection between APCO and Israel.

But before I go further, I wish to make myself very clear on this; the discussion has NOTHING to do with the ‘Jewish Question’. There is a great difference in being Jewish and being the adherents of ideological Zionism.

Malaysians are often proud to proclaim solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people. We have also maintained an independent foreign policy and have had a long record of being fully committed to the cause and principles of the non-aligned movement.

In this context, it is hard to understand how our prime minister could hire a public relations firm that is well known for its shady ties with international Zionism? Why should we trust a company with Zionist agenda to handle Malaysian strategic communications?

Not just another Jewish firm

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has raised several critical questions in Parliament on the similarities between the slogans ‘1Malaysia’ and ‘1Israel’. He also challenged the government to justify spending RM23 million of taxpayers’ money on APCO.

NONEThere is also the question of why didn’t Najib (left) and his government engage local public relations firms to undertake such work?

According to APCO’s own statement, its responsibilities cover a wide scope – beyond communications. “APCO’s work has included communication support for a broad range of reform initiatives undertaken by the government of Malaysia, especially in the areas of creating jobs, promoting education, and strengthening delivery of services to the people.”

Indeed, it is strange that this clarification did not come from Najib or the Prime Minister’s Office.

The reason Pakatan Rakyat raised these issues was not for political point-scoring, but because they warrant genuine concern for national security.

APCO Worldwide is based in Washington DC and has 23 offices all over the world including Tel Aviv. It is common knowledge that many of its key personalities and advisers are associated with Zionist Israel, e.g. Shimon Shein (former Israeli Ambassador to Germany), Itamar Rabinovich (former Israeli Ambassador to the US), etc.

APCO and ASERO

But APCO cannot deny that its operators in Tel Aviv have close links to the Zionist regime. Its CEO in Israel, Gad Ben-Ari, was a personal adviser of the late PM Yishak Rabin. APCO in Israel undertakes various communications and strategic development work for both corporate and governmental organisations.

Also, the relationship between Israel and APCO is more than merely having an office in Tel Aviv. APCO’s activities in the Zionist state go beyond the civilian sectors. Notably one of the members of Apco’s International Advisory Council is Doron Bergerbest-Eilon, who was a former security chief for the Israeli government.

NONEAPCO’s involvement in various intelligence and security-related projects is done through its strategic partner and sister company ASERO Worldwide. While APCO’s expertise is in the field of communications, ASERO specialises in homeland security and risk management consultancy.

APCO and ASERO have many overlapping consultants and management members. For example, Doron Bergerbest-Eilon who sits on APCO’s International Advisory Council was also founder and president of ASERO Worldwide.

Doron Bergerbest-Eilon was formerly a senior ranking security official of the Israeli Security Agency (ISA). He was the head of the protection and security division and held a position equivalent to the rank of major-general. His dedication to Israeli secret service has even earned him a prestigious Director’s Recognition Award by the U.S. Secret Service.

Mara Hedgecoth, the daughter of APCO CEO and President Margery Kraus also sits in ASERO as Vice President. At the same time, she also serves as Vice President and Director in APCO Worldwide.

ASERO’s Senior Vice President, Carl Truscott was another tainted figure under Bush Administration. Carl Truscott was the Director of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau.

But he resigned in August 2006 after a report by the Justice Department found he had wasted tens of thousands of dollars on luxuries, wasted millions on whimsical management decisions and violated ethical standards by ordering employees to help his nephew with a high school video project.

Recruited from Mossad

ASERO Worldwide advises Israeli military/civilian agencies on strategic and tactical security challenges and provides assistance to both governments and corporations to prepare, mitigate and recover from threats of terrorism and other hazards, as well as to protect lives and critical assets and ensure continuity of operations.

ASERO’s staff are filled with recruits from the Israel Security Agency (also known as Shabak or Shin Bet) and the infamous Mossad. As we all know, these agencies’ standard operation procedures in counter-terrorism include torturing suspects, assassinations, etc.

In 2006, APCO and ASERO introduced Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to Israel, and helped to develop Israel’s airport security system – the Suspect Detection Systems. The TSA was designed by John Magaw, another Apco leading consultant who used to serve as director of the U.S. Secret Service.

Links to Singapore

It is no secret that Singapore and Israel covertly engage in extensive cooperation in the fields of defense and intelligence. The cooperation between the two countries can be traced back to the 1960s.

singapore defence poster 170505Within the high-ranking ASERO directors and managerial officers, the only non-American or non-Israeli appears to be a Singaporean.

ASERO and APCO provide consultancy service on homeland security to the Singapore Government. ASERO, in particular, assists Singapore with technical and intelligence services in aviation and aerospace security. Their services and expertise have facilitated the rapid transfer of Israeli military and security technologies to Singapore.

The two companies are also involved in promoting Israeli participation in long-term research and cooperation in strategic fields that have security or military implications. One such institution is the Singapore-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation (SIIRD) established in 1997.

In recent years, ASERO has actively participated in many counter-terrorism activities. In the quest for academic exchange, ASERO joined the Centre of Behavioral Science (CBS). The objective of CBS is to serve as a “platform for the transfer and exchange of leading-edge knowledge and ideas which contribute to the transformation of the life of individuals, organisations and society at large”.

Access to sensitive material

Against this background, there are ample of reasons for patriotic Malaysians to question the wisdom of engaging Apco. There is no doubt that APCO does not share the vision and objective of our nation-building. It is not surprising that ‘1Malaysia’ has not been resonating well in our local context.

In fact historically, ‘1Malaysia’ sounds too similar to the various one-nation movements around the world. Unfortunately, the one-nation slogan has become inevitably associated with conservative tendencies.

As we know, ‘One Israel’ was the slogan of a failed attempt to forge unity in a fragmented political landscape. Then there was also ‘One Britain’, which had been the theme of notorious UK Conservative politicians and far-right, anti-immigration groups.

john howard malaysia visit 301106 talkingIn Australia, ex-Prime Minister John Howard (left) formulated a ‘One Australia’ policy in 1980s. In essence, ‘One Australia’ was a reaction against multiculturalism and it insisted that Australia must retain the domination of the Anglo-Saxons.

Howard’s ‘One Australia’ theme was later picked up by racist politicians such as Pauline Hanson who founded the One Nation Party. This party’s sole platform was based on fiery anti-migrants and anti-foreigners rhetoric and policies.

Surrendering sovereignty

A year after launching, the concept of ‘1Malaysia’ is still too ambiguous to the majority of Malaysians. Although the slogan has generated lots of hype, there is no substance in it.

In fact, Malaysians of all ethnicity are equally lost in this mantra-like rhetoric. The ‘feel-good’ effect cannot sufficiently cover the disappointment or disillusionment over inaction in addressing real issues affecting the nation, such as corruption, falling productivity, poverty, national unity etc.

Our concern is more than just wasting tax payers’ money on all those glitzy advertisements, billboards, songs, concerts, essay-writing competitions etc. We must address the core issue; how secure can the country be when we voluntarily expose all governmental functionaries to a private firm with a strong foreign interest?

In its work, APCO has been given access to many highly sensitive government materials which I believe even most Malaysians are denied access to. It would be absolutely naïve for us to believe that APCO will handle our state secrets ‘professionally’, especially when we run into conflict with global powers.

I hope legislators and leaders of BN would pay some attention to this serious issue. If you are truly patriotic, stand up now. Please do not surrender the fate of Malaysia into the hands of foreign powers.

UMNO Youth Chief, Khairy Jamaluddin (pic) today dared Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibahim (pic) to repeat his statement yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat about 1Malaysia.
Barisan Nasional parliamentarians will be gearing up to crucify Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim (below) for his comments on APCO. The MPs might think that they are doing the BN government a favour by defending Najib and his high-flying consultancy company.

alt

In his statement yesterday, Anwar claimed that APCO played a role in creating the 1Malaysia concept. Anwar also claimed that the1Malaysia concept is a clone to 1 Israel concept.

“I have asked Anwar to show evidence on his allegation towards the government and APCO but until now he still has not shown any proof. This is a very serious allegation,” said Khairy.

“I also asked Anwar to point out evidence whether it is true or not that APCO was appointed by Ehud Barak. But I didn’t get any reply from him. In the Dewan Rakyat I’ve asked Lim Kit Siang the same question but he ignored it. It’s clear that they were lying,” he added.

“If his allegation is true, I dare him to repeat the same statement outside the Dewan Rakyat with evidence. He should not hide behind the ‘Parliamentary Privilege’”, he added.

“For now Government cannot take any action towards him because he made that statement inside the Dewan Rakyat. We can only take legal action against him if he repeats it outside the Dewan Rakyat,” said Khairy that is also the MP for Rembau.

Meanwhile, in its statement to the media, APCO said that it had no role of any kind in creating the 1Malaysia concept, which was fully formed, and made public prior to APCO’s engagement.

“It is also incorrect that APCO represented the Government of Israel or the Israeli Prime Minister as has been alleged in Malaysia’s Parliament. The statement in Malaysia’s Parliament that APCO was involved in such a campaign is false,” according to a press statement released by APCO.

The list of conspiracy theories is a collection of the most popular theories related but not limited to clandestine government plans, elaborate murder plots, suppression of secret technology and knowledge, and other supposed schemes behind certain political, cultural, and historical events.

While a conspiracy is defined by law as an agreement between two or more people to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act,[1]aconspiracy theory attempts to attribute the ultimate cause of an event (usually major political, social, historical, or cultural events), chain of events, or the concealment of causes from public knowledge, to a secret and often deceptive plan by a group of people or organizations. Such theories usually go against a general consensus or cannot be proven using the historical method.

Purposely excluded from this list are proven historical conspiracies, e.g. the conspiracy to assassinate U.S. President Abraham Lincolnand members of his cabinet in 1865.

THE ZIONIST CONSPIRACY

Apco Jewish personality traits

I’ve interacted with numerous Jews, and their attributes depends largely on the individual. I have noticed that among religious and Zionist Jews, there is a deep seated sense of superiority. They feel that they are the “chosen ones,” and by virtue of this fact are inherently superior to Gentiles. On one extreme, this leads to a kind of religious imperialism. They seek to bring Gentiles under the dominion of the Rabbis through the Noachide movement, and certain segments of the Lubavitch Chasidic movement would actually like to use military intervention to overturn religions and cultures they deem offensive.

I’ve noticed that these kinds of Jews don’t mind spreading lies and misinformation when it suits their agenda, even when discussing other movement of Judaism. They have no problem manufacturing “facts,” even right on the spot. These Jews have formed activist organizations that have learned that if outlets of information, such as the media (both national and local) are controlled by the power of the purse, it is easier to enforce these manufactured facts on an unwitting population to both aid the Zionist agenda, as well as stifle any free political discussion on that and other “taboo” topics.

They seem to have a predisposition toward cultural subversion, and indeed subversion of any established order. In any reactionary movement, you will find a disproportionate number of Jews, even in two diametrically opposed movements. I’ve seen Socialist Jews, and Capitalist Jews; Communists, anti-Communists; Zionists, anti-Zionists; Orthodox Judaism, anti-Judaism. Even in Israel, we find small neo-Nazi movements headed by Jews. It is also well-known that most efforts toward “civil rights” and similar misguided movements are headed by Jews.

Then there are the assimilated Jews who care nothing for their heritage, and who don’t think of themselves as Jews at all. I’ve actually come across a good number of truly self-hating, anti-Semite Jews. However, if we were to draw a line in the sand and they had to choose sides, the majority would side with their own. We can see that by the overwhelming Jewish support of Israel, even by non-religious, non-observant Jews.

So, there you have it. The top characteristics I’ve seen in Jews have been: a sense of moral and intellectual superiority; xenophobia and blatant anti-Gentile racism; cultural imperialism; intellectual dishonesty; the demand for double standards, to their benefit; and a deep seated urge toward subverting established cultures and traditions, at times even their own.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon (picture)confirmed in Parliament today that the government had engaged Apco Worldwide, an international public affairs and media relations company, to boost its image overseas.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the contract is worth some RM20 million but Koh, in a written reply to a question from DAP’s Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching, did not divulge the exact amount.

“Apco Worldwide was tasked with promoting and improving Malaysia’s image overseas,” said Koh, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

He justified the appointment by asserting that a foreign firm would ensure that the country’s communication practice was in line with international standards.

To justify the hefty fees it is charging, The Malaysian Insiderunderstands that Apco Worldwide staff are now generating press releases and conducting media training for the government.

Because of the value of the contract, Apco Worldwide has set up an office for the first time in Malaysia. Its personnel are mainly from the United States, and the main focus of their job remains to improve Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s image.

It is also understood that the government has hired a separate firm in the United States to act as its lobbyist with the Obama administration.

“Appointing an international communication firm is a common practice by governments of other countries,” Koh said in his written reply to Parliament today.

He also said that inaccurate reports in foreign media had affected the international community’s confidence in the country as a stable investment, trade and tourist destination, resulting in the need to appoint Apco.

“Apart from Apco, the ministry and government agencies also appoint other local and international firms, for short and long term to provide communication services,” he said.

“Because the expenses for this service depend on the implementation of the programmes and communication projects planned from time to time according to needs, the total cost cannot be determined for the time being.”

The Malaysian Insider had reported in July that Apco was also tasked with promoting Najib’s image for his first 100 days in office and later to boost the administration’s standing worldwide.

Najib is not the first prime minister, however, to use expensive foreign help to boost his image and that of his administration.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi also used a foreign-based public relations firm to help project a positive image of himself as a progressive Muslim leader, and Malaysia as a modern Muslim nation.

The Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad administration had used disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Just exactly who is Jack Abramoff? Interestingly, Wikipedia said:

Jack Abramoff was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey into a wealthy and prominent Jewishfamily[9]. His father, Franklin Abramoff, was president of the Franchises unit of Diners Club.[10]

Ex-Malasian Leader Says He Paid Abramoff

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Monday that disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was paid $1.2 million to organize his 2002 meeting with President Bush, but denied the money came from the Malaysian government.

Mahathir told reporters he was aware a payment was made to Abramoff, but he didn’t know who made it. He said he had been persuaded by the U.S. think tank Heritage Foundation to meet with Bush at the time.

“It is true that somebody paid but it was not the (Malaysian) government,” Mahathir said. “I understood some people paid a sum of money to lobbyists in America but I do not know who these people were and it was not the Malaysian government.”

Mahathir said the Heritage Foundation believed he could help “influence (Bush) in some way regarding U.S. policies.”

Mahathir visited the White House at a time when this Southeast Asian country had emerged as a key U.S. ally in the war on terror, following Mahathir’s crackdown on suspected Islamic militants although he had been consistently critical of Bush’s foreign policies.

Abramoff, once among Washington’s top lobbyists, pleaded guilty last month to charges that he and a former partner concocted a fake wire transfer to make it appear they were putting a sizable stake of their own money into a 2000 purchase of casinos.

Abramoff also has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an investigation into his ties to members of Congress and to the Bush administration.

Interesting remarks on APCO’s appointment in Malaysia to make Najib and pals look good by Ben Bland in theHartal MSMblog. Hartal says Bland is a freelance journalist based in Singapore, reporting for publications such as The Daily Telegraph, The Economist, the FT weekend magazine, Monocle, Asia Sentinel and the British Medical Journal. He was a stock market reporter at The Daily Telegraph and Dow Jones Newswires in London, before leaving the City to Southeast Asia.)

You have to wonder what sort of internal debate went on in APCO before they decided to take on the job. Here’sUnspun’s totally fictitious and facetious account of what might have been:

APCO Dove: I don’t think we should take the job as there’s nothing we can do to change them, and if we can’t change them then there’s no way to make them look good.

APCO Hawk: Of course we should take it. The money is good and it will give a big boost to our reputation in that part of the world where we haven’t been able to make as much headway as in the US.It may even make people forget that we’re closing down…I mean scaling down…in Indonesia.

Dove: Yes, but what sort of a reputation will we have if we take this job? Najib and his goons are just in plain denial. No amount of spin we put into this will be effective unless we convince them to change their ways.

Hawk: It doesn’t matter. Think of the money we’ll get. And the opportunities it will create for us. We’ll be plugged in to all the important people in Malaysia from No.1 down. And by the time they realize that the PR is ineffective, we’ll have made our money anyway.

Dove: I’m still uneasy about all this. I’m worried our own reputation would suffer if we take them on….

Hawk: Dove, Dove have courage son. We’re like lawyers who take the view that even the worst criminal deserves a good defense. We’re here merely to tell their story in a good light.

Dove: But there is nothing to tell. There are not good stories to tell because Najib and his boys are morally and intellectually bankrupt…

Hawk: You are too pessimistic. At the end of the day the fees will go toward our bonuses and nobody will remember our sins. Look at Burson Marsteller for instance, until that bitch Rachel Maddow tagged them with the“When Evil needs public relations, Evil has Burson-Marsteller on speed-dial” soundbite everyone had already forgotten all the hopeless causes they championed…and got away with. people never learn from history. That’s our saving grace.

PM questions motive for Dr Mohd Asri’s arrest

(The Star, 2 Nov 09) KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has questioned the motive behind the arrest of former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

Dr Mohd Asri, who was arrested on Sunday night, was released on a police bond Monday without being charged.

Najib said that Dr Mohd Asri was a truthful speaker whose talks were always backed by proof and clear dalil (quaranic and Hadith verses).

“I don’t know what is the motive of the arrest. It was done by the state religious agency. It has nothing to do with the Federal Government,” he told reporters on Monday after launching a Pasar Tani convention.

————————–

However, in issues that really matter: the billion ringgit PKFZ mega scandal, the TBH possible homicide and the Perak political debacle that he himself created, Najib is absolutely silent.

This is perhaps the most credible evidence that an aggressive PR campaign is on the move, funded by taxpayers money to keep certain parties and leaders in power.

Because real leaders will tackle and at least attempt to resolve the real pressing issues.

A PR campaign will merely create issues that those leaders can easily resolve and respond to because the objective is not to solve problems but to look good.

Amidst all this saccharine sweet hullabaloo, perhaps the most telling statement from Najib (given his penchant for Freudian slips) was during the Gerakan conference, when he declared:

“I am the chairman of BN and I should make the decision for the benefit of BN.”

Eh? Not make decisions for the benefit of all the people of Malaysia meh, Mr “PM for all Malaysians”?

Staying Calm Amidst Obama’s Betrayal

With a hostile and nasty administration in Washington until either 2013 or 2017, these aren’t easy times for Israel and its supporters. That our so-called “leaders” are completely ineffectual adds to a strong sense of frustration.

There is no reason to downplay the damage that Obama has done to Israel. But it’s important to keep some things in perspective.

No buses were blown up in Israel during these past two weeks. Israelis have safely gone out to eat, drink, pray and assemble.

During the early days of this blog, there were so many times that I’d post – or start to draft something that I ended up not finishing – about bus bombings, cafe bombings, road shootings.

Then, there was good reason for despair and rage. Mass murder of Israelis was routine. Today, thankfully, it isn’t.

A lot of people in this country strongly support Israel. Unfortunately, the president and those in his administration do not. But with resolve, wisdom and the leadership of Prime Minister Netanyahu – and hopefully some help from its supporters here – Israel can get through the difficult times and endless crises that will occur during the course of the Obama administration.

Netanyahu’s Only Response – The Rest Is Commentary

Are we a vassal state of yours? Are we a banana republic? Are we youths of fourteen who, if they don’t behave properly, are slapped across the fingers? Let me tell you who this government is composed of. It is composed of people whose lives were spent in resistance, in fighting and in suffering. You will not frighten us with ‘punishments.’ He who threatens us will find us deaf to his threats. We are only prepared to listen to rational arguments.

-Prime Minister Menachem Begin, December 1981

In a world that has been conditioned to see Israel as the heavy, every Israeli retreat from positions under dispute with the Arabs will naturally be applauded. Israel will be patted on the back and congratulated as long as it continues to make unilateral concessions. But once an Israeli government decides, as it inevitably must, to draw a line beyond which it cannot retreat, the international applause will cease — and pressure will begin again. Hence the test of Israeli diplomacy is not whether it can gain short-term sympathy by sacrificing Israel’s vital interests, but whether it can protect these interests while securing international understanding and support. To yield to pressure for the sake of ephemeral international praise is as tempting as it is short-sighted. To be firm about vital matters and to earn the respect of nations for this stance is much more difficult, but ultimately more prudent and responsible. The school of thought that holds that Israel’s public relations problem would end with the establishment of a Palestinian state is wrong. In such a case Israel would be faced with an existential threat and a public relations nightmare, as Arab irredentism turns its focus on the Arab population within the remainder of Israel.
